Visitors since 10/1/2010
We are getting ready to drive 1100 miles to Colorado tomorrow morning, and Scott decided vacation haircuts were in order for the family boys:
First, Scott buzzed Brian's hair:
And he requested that I buzz his (this was a first - I have never cut Scott's hair!):

We leave really early tomorrow morning (5am!) and will drive to Hays, KS to spend the night. Happy Trails!
Erica has been helping out with VBS this week and as I drove to church to pick her up tonight, the sunset cast a nice glow on the water out front:
Tonight I switched my camera over to RAW format - I've had the camera for just over a month now and decided it was time. I took several pictures in JPG, but found the RAW adjustment to be easier.
I promised Erica I would take her to Kohl's tonight to spend the $50 of Kohl's Cash Scott racked up over the weekend. Did I mention how much I love Kohl's? Erica wanted a new swimsuit, since hers is falling apart (too much chlorine exposure). But at the end of the season, the selection is very sparse. Instead, she chose some new jeans.
The drive home normally takes 10 minutes, but tonight there was an accident on the highway. 
I feared the worst for the motorcyclist as we passed by the scene of the accident and I said a quick prayer. Later on I learned that the accident was caused by a motorist who, upon missing her exit, decided to BACK UP on the interstate. The motorcyclist clipped the back of her car, and fortunately, was uninjured.
Back at home, Scott built a little fire and Brian roasted some marshmallows. We burned some of the dead brush from the yard. 
A bit of the back story (cause this post won't make any sense without it).
Back in June, I bought an assortment of yummy cheesecakes from Sam's Club (click here for the blog post with picture). We divided the goodies up evenly - because isn't that the fair thing to do? The kids and Scott devour their portions quickly, but I tend to savor my desserts over a couple days. Fast forward from Sunday to Thursday. I still have a bit of chocolate cheesecake waiting for me. I go looking for it and I cannot find it in the fridge. I then learn that Scott gave Erica the OK to eat the rest of my chocolate cheesecake! What blasphemy! I was then informed that I "didn't consume the cheesecake within the allotted time", hence it was past the "Statute of Limitations" and open season ensued on my morsel of cheesecake.
Hmmph.
Fast forward to our trip to Massachusetts. During one of our (many) shopping excursions, Scott sees a package of Sour Patch Kids Candies while we are checking out at the Dick's Sporting Goods store. There is one thing Scott cannot resist and that is the Sour Patch Kid. I don't claim to understand this, but it is what it is. And so the bag of SPKs went into our shopping bag, and then it remained there all week long, forgotten by the man who so needed some SPKs. I brought the bag of SPKs back to Illinois, toting it in my carry on bag. Still forgotten by Scott.
So yesterday, I decide it's time to open up the bag of candies. The kids were surprised that I possessed the bag of candies (I'm not a big fan of candy in general). They asked "Hey, when did you get those?". I then explained how the bag was their Dad's, that he forgot about them and it was "well past the Statute of Limitations" on their consumption, and that we could eat them. I brought up the incident with the cheesecakes to illustrate my point (can you tell I'm still perturbed about this?).
And when Scott gets home, he sees the bag and asks "Hey - who bought the Sour Patch Kids?". Erica tries to explain the "Statute of Limitations" and the cheesecake incident, which gets translated as "Mom is eating your SPKs because you ate her cheesecake". Scott has no clue that the SPKs are even his and he thinks I bought some SPKs just to get back at him for the cheesecake incident. That's way too convoluted for me (I'm more direct - I just continuously remind him about the cheesecake, and then he reminds me about the "Statute of Limitations"). When Scott finally remembers picking out the package of SPKs, he promptly eats the remaining candies in the bag and leaves this on the table:
So now, Sour Patch Kids candy will be forever linked together with cheesecake. Very random, but just one example of silly things that go on in our family.
Today marks the last week the kids will participate in Day Camp (aka "7 Hours of Boredom", "Tortuous Camp" or any other negative name Erica thinks up). Really, I'm rather tired of the whole morning routine of dragging the kids from bed (with lots of whining "I'm so tired - do I HAVE TO GO to that torture camp?"), and preparing their lunches, cajoling them to eat and pack their lunches and snacks.
During the school year, I don't encounter half the attitude and complaining as I have endured this summer. Sigh.
To commemorate this last week, here's a picture of the lunch, snack stuff we (really, I) get together each morning. I should have taken the picture earlier, with the entire kitchen island covered with bags, lunch meat, panini maker, bread, water bottles and juice boxes, but I tend to put things away quickly.
I'm looking forward to the start of school and especially not having to make several lunches each morning!
After I received a set of Snowman coasters at Christmas, the kids have been obsessed with them. We have to use coasters at each meal, and each family member has their specially assigned coaster.
We even used the Snowman coasters until the middle of May, when I remembered to look for more seasonally appropriate ones at Kohls. We now have a set of Spring flower and these lovely seashell coasters. They remind me of our time at the beach. Ah, summer.
Side note - and even though the calendar says August, it feels like September outside. We just finished up the 2nd coolest July on record. I'm not complaining, though - the weather really has been perfect.
You might recognize two of these smiling faces - K is Erica's BFF and M is Brian's age (purported to be his friend - but you know how those boy-girl friendships get portrayed by older sisters). 
The entire B Family just completed the local Mini-Triathlon - 400 yards of swimming, then 6 miles of biking and a 2 mile run. Doesn't that sound like fun? Erica participated in some of their training sessions - she went swimming and jogging with the girls.
As mom Sara is the ultra talented seamstress, she created custom T-shirts for the occasion - Team SMAK (Sara, Miss M, Mr. Al and Miss K).
I'm thinking about forcing Erica to complete this Mini-Tri with me next year. And as a warmup, we're going to complete a 5K race beforehand.
