Belated Birthday / Anniversary for Rascal

I am such a bad Mom - I missed acknowledging Rascal's birthday / anniversary last Friday, March 11. I guess I was a little distracted with all the events of the day. But Rascal deserves better than a lame excuse like that, so tonight, she's getting a special treat - some yummy soft cat food.

Here's Rascal story, how she came to us 17 years ago. I know she may not be here with us next year (but I've been thinking this way for the last 3 years), after all, she's at least 17, maybe even 18 years old now. Scott theorizes she's just staying alive to spite the other cats.

Rascal found us 17 years ago on March 11 when we lived in West Virginia. I still remember that Friday evening I came home, tired after a long week at work. Dusk was falling and I walked out to the mailbox to retrieve the mail when I heard a “meow”, almost like a “hello”. Well, I “meowed” back. A small animal, hidden in the pine trees that lined our front yard, trotted towards me, meowing and meowing. I realized the cat must be a stray, and by “meowing” back I had “invited” the animal in.

We didn’t have any pets at the time, and didn’t want any pets, so I did what any normal person does – I ran inside the house, and turned up the TV, as to block out the constant “meowing” that had ensued outside our breezeway door. When Scott returned home later, the he fired off several questions upon entering the house - “What is that noise? Is there a cat somewhere around the house? Why is the TV turned up so loud?” I acknowledged that there was a stray cat sitting outside our door. Then I opened the door to take a peak at the animal and found this face staring back at me:

DSC_5348
OK, not that exact face - she was much younger back then and her eyes very green, but you get the picture.

Wow, what’s there not to love? Of course, we took her in, I went out and bought all sorts of cat paraphernalia, and she cuddled right up on the couch, then onto our laps and into our hearts. I put some signs up in the neighborhood (Found: Grey Tabby Cat), but after the weekend realized she had found us.

The story doesn’t end here, because a couple weeks later, we noticed that our petite little cat was looking a little “porky” in the belly. Hmmm. Yup, she was pregnant. Case in point:

Expecting

Several weeks later, she escaped down to the basement and gave birth to five little kittens, two which died, three which she cared for until we gave them away. We named the kittens Spanky, Alfalfa and Buckwheat (after the Little Rascals – OK, Scott is the one who named them). Buckwheat looked just like his mom – a brown tiger striped tabby. Spanky and Alfalfa were tiger striped, but a light grey.

I was really sad when we gave away Buckwheat - he was my favorite. I ran into his new owner one afternoon at the park, who recognized me as "The Cat Lady" (not too many Asians in that small West Virginia town) - she carried on and on about how "Max" (Buckwheat's new name) was such a great cat. I was happy for Buckwheat and his new family.

So that's how Rascal became our "family starter kit" and my first "baby". She survived the move to Indiana, and the addition of our two children.

Now she has to put up with two more cats, but she pretty much stays out of their way.

Rascal

I just had to post this picture I took of Rascal last Sunday, basking in the sun.

Cattitude

She's looking good for a 17 year old kitty, and I always approach each year like it could be her last (although Scott says she's going to outlive us all, just to spite the new cats we keep adding to our family).

288/365 - The Family Picture for 2010

Long story short, here is the 2010 installment of the family photo.

This Is the One

Taken in the backyard, with the remote shutter release.
Of course, the entire event was fraught with the usual drama and silliness as the kids had to check each picture as it was taken. We really gave our neighbors some comic relief with our shenanigans.

And then we added in an extra dynamic - pictures with the cats:

279/365 - After A Trip to the Vet...

.....Rascal needs some time chill in the backyard.

On the Prowl

She's doing great for a 17 year old kitty, with the exception of her continued weight loss. She's down to 6 lbs, 14 oz, one pound down from last year. I may have her tested for her thyroid, but at her age, I know that there could be more serious stuff coming down the pike.

But we just take each day as it comes. We think she has the gumption to keep at it just to spite Hannah and Sammy.

40/365 - Snow Day, Kids Will Play

The four inches of snow last night, coupled with additional snow today, resulted in Snow Day 2 of the school year. Of course, the kids were overjoyed and anxious to get out in the white stuff.

Rascal ventured outside for about 10 seconds before turning back.

366/365 - Rascal in the Snow

The kids built a big snowman this evening and banned me from taking pictures. So I took pictures of the cat instead.

She didn't stay outside very long. Unlike Hannah, Rascal ventures out into the cold every now and then.

269/365 - Rascal Relaxes

I give so much more screen time to Hannah, so today's pictures are of our other cat, Rascal. Rascal is over 15 years old now and was our "family starter kit". She adopted us while we lived in West Virginia (aka - she was a stray that showed up on our doorstop).

She still looks pretty good for an old kitty, relaxing in the grass:

I wonder what she was looking at in this picture - perhaps a bird or the neighbor dog.

184/365 - TaeKwonDo Class [high iso]

There is nothing more challenging than photographing in a dimly lit space. Add the flat florescent lighting and constant movement of the subjects and you'll see why I hardly ever take photos of Brian during a routine TaeKwonDo class.

Until now.

The new toy is supposed to handle high ISO, which means I can increase the ISO, reduce my shutter speed and get crisp shots.

Shot at 500 ISO, with Tungsten White Balance Setting (still shooting in JPG). I still had to adjust the color after I noticed a magenta cast.

(Brian and his partner are practicing self defense moves. She's trying to bring him down, but since he is double jointed, she's having some difficulty. Can you see me taking the picture?)

Later on, I was reading the D300 manual in bed and Rascal decided she wanted some attention. This one was shot at 2000 ISO (yes, that is two-thousand!). I adjusted the color and sharpened just a tiny bit.

So far, just loving the results I am getting out of the new camera. But still a ton to learn.

178/365 - The Cat Days of Summer

090624DSC_9384_4x6

We don't have a dog, so I changed the saying to fit.

This is Rascal and she is at least 16 years old (she was a stray, so we really don't know for sure). She pretty much spends her time sleeping, eating and drinking. And cat-fighting with Hannah, our other cat.

I really don't think Rascal minds the heat too much. Figures.

I'm ready for a cold front. How about a lukewarm front? Just SOMETHING to break the oppressive heat!

Friday Fill-Ins #113

Hannah and Rascal - will they every get along?

1. I'm an engineer by degree but somewhere deep down, I'm a closet artist and, I hope someday I'll be able spend more time on that artistic side. For now, the engineering gig pays the bills.

2. Why do I have a D70 and not a D300 yet is because I am waiting for the price of the D300 to go down. I expect this will happen when Nikon releases the D400 later this year, so I continue to be patient.

3. How does this photo editing software work, anyway? I'm talking about Lightroom and Aperture, compared with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop. I know about the latter, but don't know the details on the former. I guess that's just as well, I don't want to spend more money on software!

4. Every morning, I put Rusk Sensories Smoother on my hair. It's a leave-in conditioner that protects my tresses while I apply the hot hair dryer to it.

5. I consider myself lucky because I have been blessed by faith, family, health and wonderful friends.

6. One day we’ll see our two cats, Hannah and Rascal, act civil towards each other. I hope. Right now, they continue to hiss, swat and scowl at each other.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to meeting with my Book club friends, tomorrow my plans include running 8 miles and Sunday, I want to enjoy the Sara Bareilles concert(so stoked about that)!

Here's the 12th on March 13

Oops.....
I missed one of my pictures from yesterday -

Our older cat, Rascal, also enjoyed the warm weather. She was also in search of someone to give her a nice ear scratching.

New Member of the family

No, certainly not more children ;-).....

Since Scott is, well, "fixed" (and he recommends the procedure to all of his male friends who are done with having kids), it couldn't be more children. Plus having more children at our age would frankly kill us.

No, I succumbed to the numerous request from Erica and Brian and we adopted a new kitten. Her name is Hannah and she is a short haired tabby who looks much like Rascal, our other cat.

Speaking of Rascal, she doesn't quite like Hannah and we have to keep them separated from each other, but we see some signs of promise - they have been in the same room together and Rascal has managed NOT to hiss at Hannah. We are just taking it slow with the assimilation.

Apart from a couple of whiny evenings, Hannah has adjusted to living with us - she now curls up with us while we are watching TV and no longer jumps on top of the countertops. Erica and Brian really enjoy having a kitten who doesn't snub them (Rascal is just OLD and sleeps all day long).
